Ballet:

Ballet is the classical foundation of several other forms of dance and requires a delicate balance of science and art to perform with grace. Furthermore, ballet is a great full-body workout and has inspired barre fitness classes. All students are strongly encouraged to take a ballet class for the strong technical foundation it builds. The Conservatory of Extraordinary Dance offers the following ballet classes: Beginner Ballet, Intermediate Ballet, and Advanced Ballet.

Pointe:

An all-levels pointe class is offered for students wanting to take their ballet skills to the next level. Dancing en pointe is every ballerina’s dream, but requires strength and a solid technical foundation to achieve. The all-levels pointe class is open to dancers ages 12 and up, who have demonstrated proficiency in ballet technique.

Jazz:

Originally accompanying jazz, swing, and big band music, jazz dance combines a variety of techniques in a fun and exciting dance form, now often performed with pop music. Dancers are taught formal technique, but are encouraged to put their own personal spin on the steps to make them unique. The Conservatory of Extraordinary Dance offers Beginner and Advanced jazz classes.

Tap:

Developed alongside jazz dance in the era of jazz, swing, and big band music, tap dance is unique from other forms of dance by the unique use of metal taps on the bottom of tap shoes to make a variety of percussive sounds. Dancers in the Beginner and Advanced tap classes will learn the requisite control and precision necessary to differentiate a variety of sounds.

Irish Step:

Straight out of Ireland’s crowded pubs, Irish step dancing traditionally showcases fancy footwork and intricate patterning set to classic Irish music. Students in the Beginner and Advanced classes will learn soft-shoe technique, while students in the Advanced class may delve into some hard-shoe technique as well.

Theatre:

Dance, in a variety of styles, has long been an integral part of theatre performances. From ballet and jazz, to tap and ballroom styles, theatre dance classes highlight the variety of dance styles used in not only theatre, but also film and television. Dancers in the Beginner and Advanced theatre classes will learn to adapt to different choreography styles typically featured in performance-driven theatre.

Ballroom:

Performed by partners, ballroom dancing is featured in showcases, competitions, and social events and has surged in popularity thanks to shows like Dancing with the Stars. Ballroom dance incorporates styles from all over the world including Viennese Waltz, Tango, Rumba, Jive, Samba, Salsa, and Texas Two-Step, among others. Dancers in the Beginner and Advanced classes will learn both competitive and social styles of ballroom dance. Partners are not required, but encouraged if you have one!

Hip Hop:

Derived from freestyle street dancing, hip hop is the hottest new trend in the studio.  Featuring a combination of informal styles of dance, hip hop comprises popping, locking, isolations, and breaking.  Dancers in the Beginner and Advanced hip hop classes will learn a variety of hip hop styles including street jazz, jazz funk, and classic hip hop.

Dance Fitness/Barre:

Drawing inspiration from a plethora of dance styles, our dance fitness/barre class is designed to get you moving!  This class is tailored specifically to students' requests and can feature basic movements, stretching, strength training, cardio, core strengthening, or anything else that piques your interest.  This class features a combination of all styles of dance to help you achieve a dancer's fitness without having to learn specific choreography.

Choreography:

Students in the choreography class will learn the art of choreography and the different factors that must come together to create stunning choreography. Students may be asked to choreograph by themselves or with different sized groups, and will explore choreographing for a variety of dance styles, for everything from warm-ups to recital choreography and everything in between. Students will learn how things like music choices, group size, intended purpose, audience perception, floorcraft, levels, musicality, and step choice influence the finished design.

Lyrical/Contemporary/Modern:

These inter-related dance forms are combined into one class, unless sufficient interest warrants splitting them into separate classes. Depending on student interest, the class can be tailored more to specific interest. Lyrical and contemporary dance are both rooted in ballet, while lyrical is typically viewed as a hybrid with jazz and contemporary as a hybrid with modern. These styles of dance feature freer movements and require a great sense of musicality.
